Not a Hotel 2026 Proposal.

Yakushima is a place where the cycles of nature are made visible, shaped by a humid subtropical climate and abundant rainfall. Steep mountain slopes of predominantly granite geology are scattered with massive boulders, while rainwater flowing between them has nurtured rich soil and dense forests over time. Human circulation is guided by wooden boardwalks designed to avoid soil erosion and protect the land, maintaining a careful relationship with nature through minimal intervention. The stars floating in the clear night sky and the iconic Yakusugi cedar quietly evoke the deep passage of time embedded in this landscape.

The site likewise adjoins rich forests and sloping terrain, with open areas dotted by natural ponds and large rocks, embodying the character of the region as a whole. This project seeks to embrace the site’s inherent landscape and topography, not treating nature as a backdrop but allowing architecture to dissolve into the scenery as one of its elements. At its core is the intention to create a place where visitors can experience the power of Yakushima’s nature at close range.

We take on a limited number of projects each year. If your project aligns with our approach, we'd be glad to hear from you.
