Cafe in Meguro Honcho

Cafe in Meguro Honcho

The Meguro Honcho project is a commissioned renovation of a traditional kominka, reinterpreted as a café and bakery. The intervention seeks to establish a dialogue between the existing structure and a restrained Scandinavian sensibility, balancing warmth, clarity, and material honesty.

Rather than erasing the character of the original house, the project works through careful subtraction and precise insertion. Existing elements are preserved where possible, allowing traces of time and construction to remain visible, while new components are introduced with a quiet and consistent language.

The spatial organization is opened to support both production and public use, creating a continuous flow between kitchen, service, and seating areas. Light, texture, and proportion become the primary tools to define atmosphere, emphasizing a sense of calm and everyday intimacy.

The result is not a transformation into something entirely new, but a reconfiguration of what was already there—an architecture that supports contemporary use while maintaining a connection to its past.

We take on a limited number of projects each year. If your project aligns with our approach, we'd be glad to hear from you.
